Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday revealed a higher-performing vehicle and a more pricey one than the current flagship sedan fleet offered by Tesla. Tesla Model S Plaid, the Elon has been teasing the car for a time now. In his tweet from September 2019, he said “the only thing beyond Ludicrous is Plaid”.
Musk was speaking at the companies’ hyped up battery day event announced many new technologies and discussed the future of the company. He said to reveal several surprises among were the most anticipated a $25000 tesla and booking of already announced Tesla Model S Plaid.
The event itself was one of a kind as Musk did the Presentation in front of a fleet of Tesla cars. People are invited to only sit in their cars during the event due to the current ongoing pandemic of COVID-19 and not to spread it unintentionally.
Currently Model S Long Range Plus travel 402 miles (646 km) on a full charge, per the Environmental Protection Agency as of the 100 kWh battery pack. The newest variant will have the ability to travel 520 miles (836 km) on a single charge, The new powertrain produces 1,100 horsepower and can achieve 200 mph top speed. The car can accelerate 0 to 60 mph under 2 seconds.
Musk also shared a clip showing Model S Plaid completing a lap in 1:30.3 at the Laguna Seca raceway breaking the last record made by tesla which was six seconds behind with Tesla Plaid powertrain and chassis prototype last year.
This new Plaid powertrain will have three motors, instead of a dual-motor system in Model S and X, this results in a faster, long-ranged, and more expensive version of the flagships.
The Plaid power train will also be available in later Model X and companies most awaited Roadster which has been teased for some time as the Tesla’s supercar with an anticipated price of $200,000.
Model S Plaid can be booked on the tesla website for $1000 refundable and will go into production in late 2021. The car is offered just under $140,000, deliveries will also begin by early 2022.
Model S Plaid is also an answer to the ambitions of Luicid Air an electric car company said to be tesla true rival. Tesla is not the company to back down from a challenge. The air dream edition announced to have a 1,080 hp electric powertrain and will do 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds. With the capacity of 113 kWh battery pack, it will travel a distance of 517 miles. The car is set to release in 2021 next year.
